About the Movie Genre Wheel
The film takes twenty minutes to choose and ninety minutes to watch. Scrolling through thumbnails is where movie night goes to die — a wheel ends it by picking a genre, which narrows an impossible choice to a manageable one.
Pick the genre, not the film
Spinning for a specific film rarely works, because the wheel will land on something nobody can stream tonight. Spinning for a genre works much better: it cuts the field from everything to a shortlist, and the final pick within that genre takes a fraction of the time.
If you want to go further, spin twice — once for genre, once for decade. “Nineties thriller” is a far easier brief than “something good”.
Build a wheel of what you can actually watch
The most useful version is a shortlist everyone already agreed on. Each person adds two films they would be happy with, those go on the wheel, and the spin decides. Nobody can complain, because every option was somebody’s suggestion.
It also solves the group veto problem, where one person rejects every proposal. If their picks are on the wheel too, they have already consented to the outcome.
Variations
Rotate who adds options each week so the same taste does not dominate. For a film club, put directors or countries on the wheel instead of genres. For families, split into a children’s wheel and an adults’ wheel and alternate weeks.
Settling who chooses rather than what to watch? The random name picker does that in one spin.

Movie Night questions
How do I decide what movie to watch?
Spin for a genre rather than a specific film. It narrows the choice enough to make the final decision quick, without landing on something nobody can stream.
Can I put my own films on the wheel?
Yes. A good method is for each person to add two films they would be happy with, then spin. Everyone has pre-agreed to every possible outcome.
What if someone disagrees with the result?
Agree before spinning that the result stands. The wheel only works if the outcome is binding — otherwise you are back to negotiating.
Can I use it for TV series too?
Yes. Replace the genres with the shows on your list, or with seasons you have not finished.
