About the Workout Type Wheel

Deciding what training to do burns willpower you would rather spend on the training itself. A wheel removes that step: spin, and go. It also quietly fixes the most common problem in self-directed exercise — doing the thing you like and skipping the thing you need.

Why randomising your training helps

Left to choose, most people repeat what they are already good at. The runner runs, the lifter lifts, and the neglected thing stays neglected. Putting all of it on a wheel means the session you keep avoiding comes up roughly as often as the one you enjoy.

It also removes the negotiation. Deciding at the gym door is when sessions get downgraded or skipped; deciding by spin, before you leave, does not give you that opening.

Build a wheel you will actually follow

Put real sessions on it, not categories. “Upper body” is vague; “30 minutes push — bench, shoulders, triceps” is a plan you can walk in and execute.

Keep rest on the wheel too, if you train most days. A session that comes up as rest is permission rather than failure, and it stops the wheel pushing you into overtraining.

What a wheel should not decide

Randomising which session you do is fine. Randomising how hard you go, or training through an injury because the wheel said legs, is not. If something hurts, override it — the wheel has no idea what your body is doing.

The same applies to programmes with a deliberate structure. If you are following a plan built around progression, keep the plan; use the wheel for the days it does not cover.

Perfect for

  • Choosing a workout or fitness activity
  • Picking healthy meals and snacks
  • Adding variety to self-care days
  • Building habits one random pick at a time

How to use this wheel

  1. Check the list. Remove anything that doesn’t apply and add your own options in the panel.

  2. Spin. Press SPIN or the Space bar. Use Fullscreen to show it to a room or on a stream.

  3. Keep going. Remove the winner to go again without repeats, or tally how often each option comes up.

Want to keep it? Press Use as my wheel and it becomes your wheel on the spinner wheel homepage, saved in your browser. For more ideas, read the wheel maker guide.

Workout Type questions

How do I pick a random workout?

Put the sessions you would genuinely do on the wheel and spin before you leave the house. Deciding in advance is the part that makes it stick.

Can I add my own workouts?

Yes. Clear the wheel and write specific sessions rather than broad categories — a session you can walk in and start is much more useful than a body part.

Should I include rest days?

If you train most days, yes. It stops the wheel pushing you into training when you should be recovering, and makes rest feel like part of the plan.

Is random training as good as a programme?

No. A structured programme built around progression will beat random selection for a specific goal. A wheel is for variety and for getting started on days when choosing is the obstacle — not a replacement for a plan.

What if the wheel picks something I cannot do today?

Spin again. If you are injured, short on time, or the equipment is taken, override it — the wheel knows nothing about your situation.
