Decision making

About the Color Picker Wheel

A random colour, chosen for you. Useful when the choice genuinely does not matter and you are stuck anyway — assigning team colours, picking a highlighter, deciding what to paint next — and useful in a different way when you are trying to break out of the same three shades you always reach for.

Why randomising colour helps

Designers and artists get stuck in palettes. Given a free choice, most people return to the same narrow range again and again without noticing. A random prompt forces a starting point you would not have picked, and you can always reject it — but the rejection itself tells you something about what you actually wanted.

For teaching, it is simpler than that: it assigns colours to groups without anyone claiming they were given the bad one.

Ways people use it

Assigning team colours in a classroom or at sports day. Choosing a colour to sketch, knit, or paint with when the blank page is the problem. Picking an accent colour for a slide deck. Running a colour-themed party game where everyone has to find something matching the result.

For a specific set, clear the wheel and type in your own shades — your brand colours, the paints you actually own, the yarn in the basket. The wheel is more useful when the options are real.

A note on what this is not

This picks from a list of named colours, which is what most people want. It is not a hex generator or an eyedropper, and it does not produce colour schemes or check contrast ratios. If you need a palette with specific values for design work, a dedicated colour tool will serve you better.

Perfect for

  • Everyday decisions when you’re stuck
  • Breaking decision paralysis with a quick spin
  • Choosing between options that are equally good
  • Settling friendly debates

How to use this wheel

  1. Check the list. Remove anything that doesn’t apply and add your own options in the panel.

  2. Spin. Press SPIN or the Space bar. Use Fullscreen to show it to a room or on a stream.

  3. Keep going. Remove the winner to go again without repeats, or tally how often each option comes up.

Want to keep it? Press Use as my wheel and it becomes your wheel on the spinner wheel homepage, saved in your browser. For more ideas, read the psychology of spin wheels.

Color Picker questions

Is the colour chosen truly at random?

Yes. Each spin uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so every colour on the wheel is equally likely and earlier spins do not affect later ones.

Can I add my own colours?

Yes. Clear the list and type whatever you need — brand colours, paint names, the shades you actually have to hand. Press Use as my wheel to keep the list in your browser.

Does it give hex codes?

No. It picks from named colours. For hex values, colour scales or contrast checking, use a dedicated colour tool — this is for deciding, not specifying.

How do I stop the same colour coming up twice?

Remove the winner from the wheel before spinning again. That gives you a draw without repeats, which is what you want when assigning colours to several teams.
