About the Charades Words Wheel
Charades falls apart when someone has to think of a word on the spot — they either freeze or pick something impossible. Spinning for the word fixes both problems: nobody stalls, and nobody can claim the word was chosen to make them lose.
How to run a round
Split into two teams. One player spins, reads the word without showing anyone, and acts it out while their team guesses. Give them a minute. A correct guess scores a point and play passes to the other team.
The usual rules: no talking, no mouthing words, no pointing at objects in the room that give it away. Most groups allow gestures for "sounds like", "number of words", and "number of syllables" — agree that before you start rather than mid-argument.
Picking words that actually work
Good charades words are physical. Things with a shape or a motion — elephant, swimming, airplane — act out easily. Abstract nouns are miserable: nobody has ever successfully mimed "justice" or "progress".
Match the list to the room. For children, stick to animals, actions and everyday objects. For adults, films and songs raise the difficulty without making it unfair. Clear the wheel and type your own list for a themed round — a film night, a birthday, a work party where every word relates to the company.
Variations worth trying
Reverse charades flips it: the whole team acts and one person guesses, which is louder and funnier with bigger groups. In relay charades, the word passes silently down a line of players before the last one guesses, and the drift is the entertainment.
For a longer game night, pair this with the party games wheel to pick what to play next, or the team generator to split the room into even sides first.

Charades Words questions
How do you play charades?
One player acts out a word or phrase without speaking while their team guesses within a time limit, usually a minute. Teams alternate and score a point for each correct guess. Spinning for the word keeps it fair and stops anyone stalling.
What are good charades words for kids?
Animals, actions and familiar objects — elephant, swimming, brushing teeth, riding a bike. Anything a child can show with their whole body. Avoid abstract ideas, which are hard to act at any age.
Can I use my own words?
Yes. Clear the wheel and type your own list in the options panel, one per line, then press Use as my wheel to keep it. Handy for themed rounds — films, songs, or in-jokes from your own group.
How long should each turn be?
A minute is standard. Ninety seconds suits younger players or harder words; thirty seconds makes a fast, chaotic game. Our online timer can run the countdown on screen.
How many people do you need?
Four is enough for two teams of two. It gets better with six to twelve. Below four, play without teams and just take turns acting and guessing.
